The rise of popular heresy and the growing skill of a large number of masters in the study of the liberal arts, together presented a challenge to accepted methods of Bible study. This book examines the growth of this challenge, and the way in which some of the most able defenders of Christian orthodoxy attempted to meet it. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of theology as an academic discipline in the new universities and helped to determine the direction of the study of theology for many centuries to come. |
