Tóm tắt/ chú giải | : | This, the fifth in the series, is, like our other Puritan paperbacks-a-practical and experimental book, which is designed to show the happy effects that sound doctrine should have upon daily life. The very title makes it clear that this grace of contentment, although as precious as a jewel, is also very rare. How many of us today, among the people of God, can say with honesty that, having food and raiment, we are therewith content? Burroughs' analysis of what true Christian contentment is and what it is not, his examination of the sin of grumbling and murmuring against God, and his inquiry into the practical effects which true contentment brings to the believer, make up a book that answers every possible excuse that our hearts can offer to avoid this duty. Burroughs concluded his book by pointing out that though he had preached many sermons on this lesson of contentment, most people take much longer to learn it than he took to preach it. It is comparatively easy to preach or speak on contentment - it is a much harder thing to learn it in the heart. Do not be content, is his final word, till you have learned this lesson of Christian contentment, till you have gained some better skill in it than you have had hitherto. |
